In a bold move underscoring tensions within Nigeria’s traditional leadership structures, the Idoma Area Traditional Council (IATC) has officially nullified chieftaincy titles recently conferred on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and four other prominent figures. The decision, announced on September 9, 2025, stems from what the council describes as a direct violation of its earlier directive suspending all such honors pending comprehensive reforms.

The controversial titles were bestowed during the Igede Agba Yam Festival held on September 6, 2025, in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State. President Tinubu’s title was accepted on his behalf by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The honors were presented by His Royal Highness Chief Oga Ero (rtd.), the Adirahu of Igede, alongside titles for four other dignitaries whose identities have not been fully detailed in initial reports.

In a strongly worded statement issued by the council’s secretary, Mr. Adegbé Uloko, and endorsed by the Och’Idoma V, HRM Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo John, the IATC declared the titles “null, void, and of no legal, customary, or traditional effect.” The council emphasized that the conferments contravened its explicit order dated September 2, 2025, which halted all chieftaincy title awards across the Idoma nation to strengthen transparency and due process in traditional institutions.

“The purported conferment of chieftaincy titles by the Igede Traditional Council on September 6, 2025, is in direct violation of the IATC’s directive,” the statement read. It further reiterated the IATC’s status as the sole government-recognized traditional authority in Idomaland, warning that any actions disregarding its mandates constitute a breach of law.

The council called on the general public, government institutions, and stakeholders to disregard the invalidated titles, stressing that its decision aims to protect the sanctity of traditional institutions, ensure adherence to due process, and promote peace and unity within Benue State.

This nullification follows the IATC’s announcement just days earlier, on September 2, 2025, suspending all chieftaincy conferments. The move was intended to regulate and safeguard Idoma traditions amid ongoing reforms. According to the council, any titles awarded in defiance of this suspension would be deemed invalid from the outset.

The Idoma people, primarily residing in Benue State, have a rich cultural heritage centered around traditional councils that govern chieftaincy matters. The Och’Idoma serves as the paramount ruler, overseeing sub-groups like the Igede. This incident highlights potential frictions between local traditional bodies and the overarching IATC authority.

News of the nullification has spread rapidly on social media and news platforms, with posts from outlets like Sahara Reporters and Punch Newspapers amplifying the story. While no immediate response from President Tinubu’s office or the affected dignitaries has been reported, the development could spark debates on the intersection of politics and traditional honors in Nigeria.

Observers note that chieftaincy titles often carry symbolic weight, especially when involving national figures like the president. This revocation may signal a push for stricter governance in traditional affairs, potentially influencing similar councils across the country.

As the story unfolds, stakeholders in Benue State and beyond will be watching closely for any further escalations or resolutions. For now, the IATC’s stance remains firm: tradition must be upheld through proper channels.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
