The Benue State government, under the leadership of Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has launched an ambitious plan to revitalize agriculture and create hundreds of millionaire farmers within the next two years. The initiative kicked off today at 07:32 AM WAT with the official flagging off of the 2025 Fertilizer Distribution at subsidized rates, held at the Benue Fertilizer & Chemicals Company (BEFCO) in Makurdi.
This year, the state is releasing 600 truckloads of fertilizer valued at ₦16.8 billion. With a 50% government subsidy, farmers can access fertilizer at just ₦22,500 per bag. Additionally, the government has finalized arrangements to settle over ₦5 billion owed to genuine fertilizer suppliers, addressing past fraudulent practices and cleansing the system.
To enhance transparency and efficiency, fertilizer sales will now be processed cashlessly through accredited POS terminals, ensuring only genuine farmers benefit. A new agricultural calendar has also been adopted to guarantee timely access to inputs for both wet and dry seasons.
Beyond fertilizers, the state is transforming Benue’s agricultural narrative. Starting in December, no oranges will leave the state in raw form, thanks to a new fruit processing factory that will add value to produce, create jobs, and boost local wealth. Fr. Alia expressed optimism, stating, “Our vision is to make agriculture the pride of Benue once again.”
The governor concluded with a prayer, “May God bless our farmers, and also bless our dear state,” signaling hope for a prosperous agricultural future in Benue.
