Chief Solomon Iorpev, Technical Adviser to Benue State Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia on Media, Publicity, and Strategic Communications, has issued a strongly worded rebuttal to a recent publication by Vincent Akanmode, Deputy Editor of The Nation newspaper.

In a press release dated March 1, 2026, Chief Iorpev described Akanmode’s article—which drew parallels between Governor Alia and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, suggesting Alia is an ingrate who risks a similar political fate—as “misguided journalism” and a “blatant attempt to peddle false narratives.”

The adviser rejected any comparison between the political situations in Benue and Rivers States, arguing that while Fubara rose with the backing of his godfather, Nyesom Wike, the reverse is true in Benue. He asserted that Governor Alia’s 2023 gubernatorial victory was driven by his overwhelming personal popularity and the appeal of his agenda, not godfatherism.

Chief Iorpev cited statements from Senator George Akume himself, who in a viral video acknowledged that Alia’s popularity was “almost divine,” comparing it to that of former Governor Moses Orshio Adasu. He also referenced a recent Arise TV discussion where presenter Rufai Oseni reminded Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa that Alia’s campaign popularity surpassed all other candidates at the time.

The rebuttal highlighted Alia’s electoral performance in 2023, where he polled 473,933 votes to defeat PDP’s Titus Uba (223,913 votes), winning in 20 out of 23 local government areas. Chief Iorpev contrasted this with Senator Akume’s loss of his Senate seat in 2019 to political newcomer Senator Orker Jev, despite Akume’s control of party structures at the time.

He questioned Akanmode’s grasp of Benue politics and accused him of failing to conduct basic research, including the historical dynamics between past governors and godfathers in the state. The adviser described Akanmode’s claim that Alia’s success is attributable to Akume as “laughable,” insisting the APC’s 2023 victory in opposition was a genuine expression of the people’s desire for change under Alia’s leadership.

Chief Iorpev emphasised that Benue people are not naive and recognise Alia’s commitment to serving all citizens, not a select few claiming stakeholder status. He urged journalists to focus on factual reporting that offers solutions rather than spreading propaganda.

The release concluded by reaffirming confidence in Governor Alia’s leadership and called for serious-minded engagement amid Nigeria’s challenging national circumstances. No immediate response has been received from Vincent Akanmode or The Nation newspaper as of the time of this report.
