Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has sworn in Mrs. Franca Yuwa as a Judge of the Benue State High Court, using the occasion to reiterate his administration’s unwavering support for a strong, independent, and accountable judiciary.
The swearing-in ceremony took place earlier today at the Government House in Makurdi. In his address, Governor Alia emphasized that his government remains fully committed to upholding judicial independence, accountability, and integrity across the state.
Describing Justice Yuwa’s appointment as a well-deserved recognition of merit, the Governor highlighted her impressive career progression within the judicial system. He traced her journey from Magistrate Grade II, through Chief Magistrate, to her previous role as Registrar of the High Court. According to the Governor, this elevation serves as an inspiring message to young lawyers—especially women—that dedication, hard work, and excellence will always be rewarded in the judiciary.
Governor Alia assured the state’s judges of his administration’s continued backing, pointing out that more appointments to the High Court have been made under his leadership than in recent years. He explained that these efforts are deliberately aimed at addressing case backlogs, enhancing the efficiency of justice delivery, and rebuilding public confidence in the courts.
The Governor also outlined broader reforms undertaken by his administration, including investments in court infrastructure, improvements in judges’ and judicial staff conditions of service, and a consistent respect for judicial autonomy.
While pledging this support, Governor Alia charged the newly sworn-in Justice Yuwa to maintain the highest standards of judicial conduct. He warned against any form of undue influence, pressure, or inducement that could compromise the bench. “Judicial independence must not translate into impunity,” he stated firmly, adding that citizens expect the courts to remain fair, firm, and guided solely by truth and equity.
The appointment and the Governor’s remarks come at a time when the Benue judiciary continues to play a critical role in upholding the rule of law in the state. Justice Yuwa’s induction is seen as part of ongoing efforts to bolster the judiciary’s capacity and ensure timely access to justice for all residents of Benue.
