Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to rebuilding the state, highlighting significant strides in security, economic revival, infrastructure, and support for displaced persons during the 2nd Virtual Town Hall Meeting with the Benue diaspora community.

The session, organised by the Benue State Directorate for Diaspora Linkages and Investments and hosted by its Director-General, Abraham T. Girigir, took place from late Saturday into the early hours of Sunday, March 22, 2026. Participants joined from various parts of the globe to engage directly with the governor on developments back home.

Reflecting on his nearly three years in office, Governor Alia noted that the administration inherited a state grappling with dysfunctional institutions, a weakened economy, and widespread insecurity that had affected up to 17 local government areas. He explained that deliberate measures have since been implemented to stabilise governance and set a clear path for sustainable development.

On the security front, the governor disclosed that attacks and killings previously driven by armed herders and terrorists have been substantially reduced, with only a few hotspots remaining. He credited this progress to sustained collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies, despite ongoing challenges from porous borders with neighbouring states and international boundaries. The deployment of technology-driven security solutions was also highlighted as a key enhancer of current operations.

Addressing the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs), Governor Alia revealed that over 600 individuals were displaced at the peak of the crisis as of December 2025. He reported that many have begun returning voluntarily to their communities, while the government continues to prioritise safe and complete resettlement. He acknowledged vital support from the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, as well as contributions from institutions including UBA, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nasarawa State Government, with total interventions valued at ₦1.27 billion.

In the economic sector, the governor emphasised efforts to revive critical industries such as Taraku Mills while maintaining Benue’s leadership in soybean production. He pointed to several now-operational factories producing juice, bread, water, and beverages as initiatives designed to boost local manufacturing and retain economic value within the state.

Infrastructure developments were a major focus, with the governor detailing completed and ongoing road projects across the state, including major township roads in Makurdi and Gboko, as well as inter-local government networks aimed at improving connectivity. He also noted federal collaboration on significant projects such as the Wurukum overhead bridge.

Looking ahead, Governor Alia announced plans to support civil servants through a federal housing scheme and the development of a “Renewed Hope Estate” in Makurdi, intended to attract investors and encourage diaspora participation.

He likened the rebuilding process to the gradual healing of an old wound, stressing that it requires time, patience, and collective effort.

He reiterated his openness to ideas and continuous learning, urging diaspora members to remain actively engaged in the state’s development. In his closing remarks, Governor Alia emphasised unity as the driving force for progress, calling on all stakeholders to work together toward a stronger, more prosperous Benue State.

The town hall underscored the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, diaspora engagement, and tangible recovery across multiple fronts.
