Governor Alia Honors Fallen Heroes on Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary

On October 1, 2025, His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the Executive Governor of Benue State, commemorated Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary with a heartfelt tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes. The event, held at Government House, Makurdi, saw the governor honor the families of those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom and sovereignty.

Governor Alia paid tribute to the brave men and women, both military and civilian, who lost their lives in defense of the nation. “I extend my heartfelt tribute to the fallen heroes, both military and civilian, who gave their lives in defense of our freedom. To those still in active service, we thank you and pray for your protection,” he stated.

The governor emphasized the profound impact of these courageous individuals, noting that their sacrifice ensures others can live in peace and unity. “Their sacrifice is a debt we can never repay, but one we must never forget,” he added. To honor their memory, Governor Alia awarded scholarships to the children of fallen heroes, declaring, “No child of a hero should ever be left behind, and no sacrifice should ever fade into silence.”

In a moment of reflection, the governor prayed for God’s comfort upon the families of the fallen, blessings for Benue State, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He also addressed ongoing security challenges across the state, acknowledging the efforts of security agencies. “We have embarked on security reforms to guarantee peace, protect our communities, and allow our people to live and farm without fear. Our uniformed personnel are making sacrifices, and we are recording significant successes,” he concluded.

The event, coordinated by Asortar James Asortar, Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Media, underscored the state’s commitment to remembering and supporting the legacies of its heroes.
