Makurdi residents have every reason to smile today as Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia officially kicked off the long-awaited dualization of Jonah Jang Crescent Road, a strategic route that stretches from the city centre all the way to High Level Market and links directly with the popular High Level underpass.
The flag-off ceremony held this afternoon, 8th December 2025, marks another bold step in the Alia administration’s aggressive push to modernize infrastructure across the state capital and ease the daily nightmare of traffic gridlock that has plagued one of Makurdi’s busiest commercial corridors for years.
Speaking at the event, Governor Alia described the project as a game-changer that will not only decongest traffic but also enhance road safety and supercharge commercial activities in the High Level axis. “This dualization is a major step towards transforming Makurdi into a more accessible and business-friendly city. Residents and traders will experience smoother travel and improved connectivity,” he told the cheering crowd.
The project is expected to create hundreds of direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase while stimulating economic growth in surrounding neighbourhoods. Traders at High Level Market, long frustrated by the bottlenecks that choke access to their businesses, have particularly welcomed the news, with many describing it as a “Christmas gift” from the administration.
Road users who spoke to journalists at the flag-off site expressed optimism that the dual carriageway will finally put an end to the endless go-slow that turns a five-minute journey into an hour-long ordeal, especially during peak hours and market days.
With earth-moving equipment already rolling onto the site just hours after the ceremony, it is clear the governor means business. Residents now hope the contractor will maintain both speed and quality to deliver a road that matches the vision the governor has painted for a new Makurdi.
Another promise kept, another step forward for Benue.
