A prominent local voice from Kwande Local Government Area in Benue State has voiced deep frustration over persistent insecurity, alleging that the region’s rich mineral resources are not translating into improved security or development for its people. In a lengthy social media post shared on February 9, 2026, the advocate highlighted the mineral wealth emanating from the Turan-Kwande axis, arguing that revenue generated from these resources should be sufficient to address insecurity across multiple fronts.
The post questions what the people of Kwande receive in return, describing the current situation as a form of neglect or “payback” despite the area’s economic contributions to Benue State and Nigeria. The writer expressed exhaustion with the ongoing violence, noting that residents now look to the Council Chairman and Governor for solutions, yet support appears absent outside of election periods.
The message pointed out that high-profile figures—including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and gubernatorial aspirants—frequently visit Kwande during campaigns, but no similar attention is given during crises. “Today, Kwande is empty, Kwande is helpless, with no one coming to help us,” the post lamented.
A recurring theme was the perceived erosion of traditional Tiv unity. The advocate reminisced about a time when Tiv communities stood together in solidarity, responding to any distress call as a collective. Today, the post claimed, sympathy has waned, replaced by political divisions along party lines—APC, PDP, Akume camp, Alia camp—and blame-shifting rather than joint efforts to address challenges.
The writer further alleged that internal betrayal has enabled external attacks, stating that “someone cannot penetrate your house without internal mappers” and suggesting that some Tiv individuals may be complicit in guiding assailants. Reflecting on the past, the post recalled how Kwande residents once traveled to support other Tiv areas against external threats, contrasting that with the current reality where “our brothers are the ones leading people to destroy us.”
In a direct appeal, the advocate called on the Tor Tiv—the paramount ruler of the Tiv people—to visit the affected areas personally to assess the situation. The post also urged Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia to go to the scene, see conditions firsthand, and implement effective measures to restore peace.
The outcry comes against the backdrop of repeated attacks in Kwande, including recent incidents of arson, killings, and abductions attributed to suspected herdsmen, which have left communities vulnerable and displaced. The emotional post reflects growing disillusionment among some residents who feel economically valuable areas are being left to fend for themselves amid escalating insecurity and diminishing communal solidarity.
