On Monday, August 25, 2025, the Eunice Spring of Life Foundation (ESLF) marked the birthday of its founder, Dr. Eunice Erdoo Ortom, with a unique celebration in Makurdi. The event featured a special physical exercise session and a health talk focused on cancer awareness, highlighting Dr. Ortom’s lifelong advocacy against the disease.

The day began with a rigorous workout, including sit-ups, press-ups, and skipping motions, designed to engage participants. This was followed by an insightful health talk delivered by ESLF’s Programme Coordinator, Dr. Comfort Abaa, a professionally trained nurse. Dr. Abaa emphasized the importance of routine tests like pap smears and breast self-examinations for early cancer detection, noting that such measures save lives. She also encouraged regular physical exercise and a healthy diet to prevent or manage cancer.
Dr. Ortom, visibly moved by the surprise event, expressed her gratitude to the ESLF staff for their thoughtful initiative. She praised the choice of activities, reflecting her personal commitment to cancer care. “Cancer is not a death sentence as you can live longer than the doctor’s report said you would and live as long as your normal life span determines,” she encouraged, urging attendees to adopt healthy lifestyles to fight the disease.
Participants, including staff and community members, lauded the event’s innovative approach. Many admitted it was a rare opportunity to engage in physical exercise, which they had neglected for some time. The celebration also featured a session of fruits and natural drinks, promoting healthy eating habits and demonstrating how personal choices can contribute to a healthier, cancer-free world.
Dr. Ortom, who has provided all-round support to cancer patients over the years, shared her deep connection to the cause, having championed it during her tenure as First Lady of Benue State. The event underscored her ongoing dedication and inspired attendees to prioritize their health.
This unique birthday celebration not only honored Dr. Ortom’s legacy but also reinforced ESLF’s mission to raise cancer awareness and promote wellness in the community.
