The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, has announced a groundbreaking achievement in reproductive healthcare, recording a 68–70 percent success rate with its newly installed In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) equipment at the Mohammed Buhari Mother and Child Hospital (BSUTH Annex).
The Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, made the disclosure on Friday, March 20, 2026, during a media briefing at the hospital headquarters. He described the development as a rare and exceptional milestone, emphasizing that the IVF facility is fully functional, rigorously tested, and delivering results comparable to global standards.
Dr. Hwande revealed that BSUTH is now the second state university teaching hospital in Nigeria to offer IVF services, joining Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in expanding access to advanced fertility treatment beyond private facilities.
The CMD credited Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for introducing the subsidized IVF programme, designed primarily to benefit the masses and lower-income earners. He disclosed that the entire procedure is offered at an affordable cost of ₦700,000 covering preparation, treatment, and consumables while drugs are purchased separately under strict supervision. He urged couples facing infertility challenges to take advantage of the opportunity.
Dr. Hwande also updated the public on the Lassa fever situation, noting a steady decline in cases at the hospital. He advised patients experiencing any challenges to report them through the SERVICOM unit for prompt resolution and improved service delivery.
Speaking further, the IVF Team Lead and Consultant Gynaecologist, Dr. Joseph Agulebe, reaffirmed the cost structure and encouraged eligible couples to access the service, highlighting its life-changing potential for families.
The introduction of IVF services in January 2026 has been hailed as a major step forward in addressing infertility in Benue State, reducing the financial burden on patients and positioning BSUTH as a key centre for advanced reproductive care in the region.
