A fresh political storm is brewing in Benue State as Rt. Hon. David Agada Ogewe, the member representing Oju/Obi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has vehemently denied allegations that he referred to youths of the Igede nation as “fools.”

The controversy erupted after the Igede Youths Council (IYC), a prominent socio-cultural group, reportedly issued a stern warning to the lawmaker over what they described as “ludicrous comments” disparaging the youth from the area. According to reports by Daily Post Nigeria, the youth body expressed deep displeasure with Ogewe’s alleged remarks, prompting a swift public backlash.

In a strong rebuttal, Hon. Ogewe dismissed the claims as baseless and politically motivated, insisting that he has never made such derogatory statements against the Igede people—particularly the youth, whom he described as vibrant and integral to the development of the constituency.

“I have the utmost respect for the Igede nation and its youths. To suggest that I called them fools is not only false but a deliberate attempt to incite division and tarnish my reputation,” the lawmaker reportedly stated.

The denial comes at a time of heightened ethnic and political sensitivities in Benue State, where identity-based advocacy groups often play pivotal roles in shaping public discourse. The Igede, one of the major ethnic groups in the state, have long demanded greater inclusion and recognition in governance and resource allocation.

While the exact context of the alleged comment remains unclear, sources suggest it may have stemmed from a broader discussion on youth involvement in politics or community development—issues that have been flashpoints in the region.

As the story gains traction online and in local circles, many are calling for calm and constructive dialogue. The IYC has yet to release an official statement detailing the specific remarks that triggered their caution, but the incident has reignited conversations about respect, representation, and the responsibilities of elected officials.

For now, Hon. Ogewe maintains his innocence and urges his constituents to disregard what he calls “mischievous propaganda.” Whether this will quell the unrest or escalate into a larger confrontation remains to be seen.

In a state where unity is often tested by tribal and political fault lines, this episode serves as another reminder of the delicate balance leaders must strike in their words and actions. The people of Oju/Obi—and Benue at large—will be watching closely.
