ALGON Dismisses Report of Crisis in Benue Local Government Finances, Reaffirms Support for Tinubu, Alia

The Benue State Chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has dismissed as false and misleading a media publication alleging financial irregularities and a crisis in the administration of local government funds in the state.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at the ALGON House in Makurdi, the Association described the report titled “Fresh Storm Rocks Benue’s Local Government Finances” as a deliberate distortion of facts aimed at creating unnecessary tension.

ALGON stated categorically that there is no crisis within the local government system, contrary to the claims in the publication. The Association maintained that Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has remained committed to strengthening local government administration.

The group highlighted achievements including the award of contracts for the construction of five-kilometre roads in various councils, regular payment of workers’ salaries, and execution of people-oriented projects.

ALGON further clarified that the postponement of a Joint Allocation Account Committee (JAAC) meeting was a routine administrative adjustment and not due to any protest or walkout by council chairmen.

The Association pledged continued support for the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Alia while urging the public to disregard the misleading report.
