In a determined push to strengthen governance at the third tier, the Benue State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has convened a statewide interface between its leadership and every serving councillor across the 23 local government areas.
The high-powered session, chaired by Rt. Hon. Vitalis Terhile Neji (Executive Chairman of Kwande LGA and ALGON Benue State Chairman), focused on harmonising priorities, addressing field challenges, and sharpening service delivery at the ward level.
Councillors used the platform to openly table their concerns, share success stories, and propose people-centred projects, and seek clearer synergy with both the state government and ALGON structures. Rt. Hon. Neji, in turn, restated ALGON’s resolve to ensure that every councillor initiates and executes tangible, verifiable projects in their wards in line with international best practices for local administration.
A major highlight of the meeting was ALGON’s announcement of plans to restore brand-new legislative council buses to all 23 local government legislative councils. The initiative, according to the leadership, is aimed at boosting mobility, operational efficiency, and the overall capacity of councillors to effectively discharge their oversight and law-making responsibilities.
Neji emphasised that every ALGON intervention remains fully aligned with the development agenda of the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, whom he praised for exemplary leadership and consistent delivery of essential services to the people. He noted that Governor Alia expects all appointees and elected officials under his administration to complement state efforts through visible, impact-driven grassroots projects.
The session drew an array of local government heavyweights, including Hon. Melvin Eje (Chairman, Agatu LGA and Deputy ALGON Chairman), Hon. Timothy Nyiakura Adi (ALGON Secretary), Hon. Shaku Justine (ALGON Welfare Secretary and Chairman, Katsina-Ala LGA), and several other council chairmen.
At the end of deliberations, participants described the engagement as timely and reinvigorating, reaffirming ALGON Benue’s commitment to coordinated leadership, accountable governance, and sustainable development across every ward and local government in the state.
With the promise of new legislative buses and a renewed focus on measurable results, councillors departed the meeting visibly energised, signalling that the third tier of government in Benue State is poised for greater productivity in the months ahead.
