Two years after stepping down from office, former Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Chief Samuel Ortom, continues to demonstrate remarkable leadership and resilience, earning widespread admiration and gratitude from his people. A recent social media post by Asom has highlighted the qualities that have seen Ortom grow stronger in the eyes of many, even as he navigates a complex political landscape.
Asom’s post outlines six key traits that define Ortom’s leadership style. First, he leads with forgiveness, eschewing grudges to foster unity. Second, he embraces inclusivity, transforming former opponents into collaborators. Third, his transparency shines through as he openly shares the burdens he carries. Fourth, Ortom acts with compassion, addressing situations others might overlook. Fifth, he upholds the dignity of both his supporters and former adversaries. Lastly, he prioritizes the state and its people above political agendas.
The post also recounts a personal anecdote from Asom, who credits Ortom with a compassionate act during a challenging time. Detained at the Police Station in New GRA, Makurdi, Asom was informed by Barr. Terra Mue Clement that Ortom, upon learning of the situation, promptly released funds and directed Mue to secure his release. Asom was freed before the weekend, accompanied by apologies, a testament to Ortom’s influence and commitment to his people.
Asom notes that six out of ten politicians now working with Ortom were once aligned with Senator Gabriel Suswam, many of whom openly opposed him across social media, homes, and hinterlands. Yet, Ortom’s approach—forgiveness, encouragement, and open dialogue—has won them over. His willingness to explain the enormous challenges of funding and security, framing them as struggles rather than failures, has further solidified his reputation.
Ortom’s legacy as the defender of the Benue Valley and protector of his people remains strong. Asom’s post concludes with a heartfelt prayer: “May the Lord continue lifting you higher.” This sentiment echoes the growing recognition of Ortom’s leadership, rooted not in power but in lifting others, proving that forgiveness is courage and true leadership heals divides.
