A wave of violence has left many dead in Benue South following coordinated attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on communities in Otukpo Local Government Area.
The attacks began on Saturday when gunmen invaded Akpachi village in Ugboju community, killing two persons and injuring several others. Barely 24 hours later, the attackers struck again in the early hours of Sunday at Otukpo Nobi community, where at least eight people were reportedly killed and several others sustained injuries.

The latest bloodshed comes barely one month after the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Ardo Risku Mohammed, and his associate, Yakubu Isah, who were ambushed in the same area.
The incidents have thrown the affected communities into mourning and heightened fears over the worsening security situation in Benue South. Angry youths and residents stormed the Och’Idoma Palace in Otukpo, protesting the persistent attacks. Some protesters attempted to pull down the palace gate, while others reportedly brought corpses to the palace in a show of anger and demand for urgent government intervention.
Residents have called on both the Benue State and Federal Governments to deploy additional security personnel to prevent further loss of lives. As of the time of reporting, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement, while the casualty figure was expected to rise as search efforts continued.
The renewed attacks have further strained the fragile peace in the region.
