Benue Police Command Orders Immediate Dismantling of All Illegal Checkpoints and Roadblocks

The Benue State Police Command has issued a strong directive aimed at restoring sanity and safety on the state’s roads. The Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus C. N. Nwadiogbu, psc(+), mnips, PhD, has ordered the immediate dismantling of all illegal checkpoints, roadblocks, and unauthorised revenue collection points across Benue State.

The directive, which affects all routes with particular emphasis on major federal highways including the Makurdi-Lafia, Makurdi-Gboko, Ugbema-Vandeikya, Gboko-Aliade, and Otukpo-Otukpa roads, seeks to enhance public safety, ease the free flow of traffic, and eliminate incidents of harassment, extortion, and other unwholesome practices faced by commuters.

CP Nwadiogbu has mandated all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Unit Commanders to ensure strict and immediate compliance within their areas of responsibility. Only security checkpoints duly approved by appropriate authorities and properly manned by relevant security agencies will be permitted to operate in the state.

The Command issued a stern warning to offenders, stating that anyone found mounting, operating, or collecting revenue illegally at unauthorised checkpoints will face decisive disciplinary and legal action in accordance with extant laws. Members of the public have been urged to promptly report any case of extortion, harassment, or suspicious checkpoints to the nearest Police Station or relevant security agency.

In a message of assurance, the Police reassured residents and road users that the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains resolute and committed to ensuring the safety and security of all persons and road users in Benue State. The public has also been encouraged to remain vigilant and continue supporting security agencies by reporting suspicious persons, movements, vehicles, and activities through official channels.

The press release, signed by DSP Udeme Edet, Police Public Relations Officer, was issued on 26th June, 2026. This decisive move by the Benue State Police Command is expected to significantly improve the travelling experience for residents and reduce criminal activities on the state’s highways.
