Residents of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, are appealing to the state government and road contractors over the severe traffic congestion and hardship caused by ongoing infrastructure projects across the city.

In a detailed post, Ukeyima John UKmoni commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for initiating several road construction projects, describing them as a welcome development for improving the state’s infrastructure. However, he raised concerns about the execution strategy, noting that contractors have opened multiple major roads simultaneously without completing existing ones, leaving many routes half-finished and making movement around the city extremely difficult.

He specifically highlighted the situation at the High Level underpass, where three out of four major entrances remain incomplete, even as work has commenced on another major route — the Railway Bypass leading from the underpass down to the Police Headquarters. This approach, according to the post, has worsened traffic congestion and created unbearable conditions for motorists.

The appeal emphasized the timing of these challenges, coming at a period of already high fuel costs, resulting in wasted time, increased transportation expenses, and unnecessary hardship for residents. The writer urged the government and contractors to adopt a more coordinated approach by completing one or two roads before opening new ones, stressing that development should improve the lives of the people rather than subject them to avoidable stress.

The post concluded with a call for the concerns to be given the deserved attention, reflecting growing frustration among residents despite their support for the governor’s infrastructure initiatives.
