A tragic incident unfolded in Peva community, Benue State, on February 1, 2026, as gunmen ambushed and killed a resident identified as Ortwerver Angahar (also referred to as Ortwer Angahar). The victim, described as a visitor to the area who pioneered a medical scanning facility in Peva, was reportedly the first person to establish such a service locally.
According to accounts circulating on social media from community sources, including a post by a local page known as Slow Pee SRG, Angahar was attacked while riding his ordinary Hajue motorcycle. The assailants, described as “well-known unknown gunmen,” fatally shot him and made away with the bike. The incident has sparked outrage over persistent insecurity in the region, with claims that criminal elements continue to target civilians despite earlier assurances of disarmament or limited access to weapons.
The post highlighted frustration among locals, alleging that certain groups previously claimed a lack of arms to address threats from Fulani herders but appear equipped to carry out criminal acts within communities. It accused these elements of collaborating with external parties to perpetrate violence, including taking lives among their own “brothers,” and ambushing innocent people on routine commutes.
Angahar’s death adds to the ongoing wave of violence plaguing parts of Benue State, where gunmen attacks, often linked to farmer-herder conflicts, have claimed numerous lives in recent months. Communities in areas like Peva have expressed grief over the loss of a contributor to local healthcare access, with tributes mourning him as a valuable member who brought essential medical services to the area.
As of now, no official statement from security agencies has been reported on the incident, and investigations into the perpetrators remain ongoing amid calls for stronger measures to curb such killings. Residents have prayed for the repose of Angahar’s soul, underscoring the human cost of the persistent security challenges in the region.
This event underscores the broader security concerns in Benue, where similar ambushes on roads and in communities continue to disrupt daily life and economic activities.
