In a decisive blow against criminal elements, troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested seven suspected cultists and uncovered a dangerous cache of weapons during a targeted operation in the North Bank area of Makurdi, Benue State. The raid, executed on October 30, 2025, marks a significant step in the military’s ongoing campaign to curb cult-related violence and other crimes plaguing the state capital and its environs.
Acting Media Information Officer Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu confirmed that the recovered items included two locally made pistols, one cartridge, a 7.62mm ammunition round, an empty shell casing, a dagger, and several bags containing charms and other incriminating materials. The suspects, believed to be involved in armed robbery, drug abuse, and violent clashes, are currently in custody awaiting further investigation and prosecution.
Force Commander Major General Moses Gara commended the troops for their professionalism and urged sustained pressure on criminal networks. In a strong appeal to the youth, particularly students, he called for a rejection of cultism in favor of peace, discipline, and patriotism. “Our young people must choose the path of progress, not destruction,” he emphasized.
Operation Whirl Stroke reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across Benue and neighboring states. The successful operation not only disrupts a known criminal hideout but also sends a clear message: law enforcement remains vigilant and proactive in the face of rising insecurity.
Residents of North Bank and surrounding communities have expressed relief, though many continue to call for sustained security presence and community-based interventions to prevent youth recruitment into cult groups. As investigations proceed, authorities hope the arrests will yield intelligence to dismantle broader networks operating in the region.
