Suspected bandits, reportedly fleeing intensified military operations elsewhere, launched a violent attack on the Tarveshimam community in Ananum, Donga Local Government Area of Taraba State, on Sunday evening.
The assault, which began around 6:30 p.m., saw the armed group storm the Tiv Christian settlement located along the Mararaba Ichen–Donga Gaba road, setting several homes ablaze and sending residents into panic.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers had been overpowered by Nigerian Army troops in a separate operation before regrouping and targeting the community in apparent retaliation or desperation. Tarveshimam has faced escalating security threats in recent months, making it particularly vulnerable during such incursions.
A resident, Mr. Terwase, who narrowly escaped the violence, recounted being chased inside his own home with a cutlass by one of the assailants. “They pursued me in my house, but I escaped,” he said, adding that he managed to flee unharmed despite the close pursuit.
No lives were lost in the incident as of the latest reports, but at least four houses were completely destroyed by fire, leaving families displaced and property in ruins.
The attack has heightened anxiety among residents of Tarveshimam and surrounding Tiv communities along the volatile border corridor, with locals calling for immediate reinforcement of security presence to prevent further reprisals or escalation.
Community leaders and survivors have urged the Taraba State government and security agencies to act swiftly to restore calm and protect vulnerable settlements from becoming soft targets for fleeing criminal elements.
As investigations continue, the incident underscores the persistent challenges of banditry and displacement in parts of Taraba State, where military pressure in one area often displaces threats to nearby civilian populations. No official statement has been issued by security authorities concerning the operation or the subsequent attack at the time of this report.
