In a dramatic turn of events in Benue State, former Assembly Speaker Dajoh has been suspended following allegations of orchestrating an attempted impeachment of Governor Hyacinth Alia. The unfolding political saga, which has gripped the state, began with Dajoh’s resignation on August 24, 2025, a move he described as being taken “in good faith and in the best interest of the state”. As reported by Ahemen Desmond, “Just days earlier, a significant political rift had occurred when the Assembly, under Dajoh’s leadership, suspended four lawmakers including Alfred Emerga, Terna Shimawua, Cyril Ikong, and Abu Umoru for allegedly scheming to impeach him.”

The situation took an unexpected twist when Dajoh resigned, leading to an emergency session where his suspension was reversed. In a surprising development, Alfred Emerga, one of the previously suspended lawmakers, was elected as the new Speaker. This shift set the stage for further action against Dajoh.

On August 26, the Assembly turned its attention back to Dajoh, this time for the alleged impeachment plot. According to Desmond, “A motion had been brought by Terna Shimawua and seconded by James Umoru, accusing Dajoh of orchestrating an attempted impeachment of Governor Hyacinth Alia.” Acting on this motion, the Assembly imposed a three-month suspension on Dajoh, a decision made by Speaker Emerga, who presided over the motion. Notably, the suspension was reduced from an initial six months to three without a vote.

The Assembly’s decision to suspend Dajoh stems from allegations that he attempted to orchestrate the impeachment of Governor Alia. The motion, advanced by colleagues and ruled upon by his successor, was described by Desmond as “a brief, non-voted yet firm disciplinary measure in the form of a three-month suspension.”

As the political drama continues to unfold, the people of Benue State are left watching closely to see what further developments will emerge from this contentious leadership struggle.
