The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has described the death of legendary journalist and columnist Dan Agbese as a painful and irreplaceable loss to Nigeria, declaring that the country has been robbed of one of the few remaining steady, wise, and fearless voices in its media landscape.
In a condolence message released on Tuesday evening, the SGF praised the late Agbese as a consummate professional whose weekly columns over decades served as both moral compass and national mirror, holding leaders accountable while offering thoughtful guidance to ordinary citizens.
“Dan Agbese was more than a journalist; he was a pillar of insight, a fatherly voice in national discourse, and a rare breed whose pen was always guided by truth, balance, and deep love for Nigeria,” Senator Akume wrote. “His absence leaves a significant void at a time his wisdom and steady presence are still very much needed.”
Agbese, co-founder of Newswatch magazine and one of the most respected columnists of his generation, passed away after a brief illness, though details of his final moments have not yet been made public by the family.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, with many describing him as the last of the old guard, journalists who combined courage with elegance and who saw their role not merely as reporting events but as shaping a better society through reasoned, fearless commentary.
For millions of Nigerians who grew up reading his columns in Newswatch and later in various national dailies, Agbese’s death marks the quiet closing of a golden chapter in Nigerian journalism.
Rest in peace, Sir. Your words will continue to speak long after you have gone.
