Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District, has formally declared his intention to seek a third term in the Nigerian Senate during the 2027 general elections.
The announcement, made public on February 24, 2026, marks the early opening of what is expected to become one of the most competitive senatorial races in Benue State. Moro, who has held the seat since 2019 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cited the need for continuity in legislative representation and the completion of ongoing projects as key reasons for his decision to run again.
In his declaration statement, the senator emphasized a people-centered approach, stating that his motivation stems from a commitment to service delivery rather than personal ambition. “My focus remains on service delivery and sustaining quality representation for the people of Benue South,” he said. “It is about the welfare and progress of the people, not personal gain.”
Since entering the Senate in 2019, Moro has been involved in sponsoring bills and advocating for constituency projects in education, infrastructure, healthcare, and youth empowerment across the zone, which comprises nine local government areas including Otukpo, Ado, Agatu, Apa, Obi, Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Okpokwu, and Oju.
His bid for a third consecutive term comes at a time when political alignments are already shifting in Benue ahead of the 2027 polls. Analysts anticipate a crowded field of aspirants from both the PDP and opposition parties, with several prominent figures from the zone expected to challenge the incumbent. The race is likely to be influenced by factors such as zoning dynamics, party primaries, performance records, and grassroots mobilization.
Moro’s early declaration is seen by supporters as a strategic move to consolidate his base, secure party endorsement, and deter potential challengers. Critics, however, argue that long tenures in the Senate can lead to complacency and call for fresh representation to inject new ideas into the district’s development agenda.
Benue South, traditionally a PDP stronghold, remains a politically significant zone in the state, and the senatorial contest is expected to draw intense attention as the 2027 election cycle gains momentum. Senator Moro’s campaign is anticipated to focus heavily on his track record of constituency engagement, legislative contributions, and promises to deliver more impactful projects if re-elected.
The declaration has already sparked widespread discussions across social media and political circles in Benue, with many residents and observers weighing the merits of continuity against the need for generational change in representation.
