Mr. Oche John Moro, son of Senator Abba Patrick Moro representing Benue South Senatorial District, has publicly apologised following intense criticism and backlash on social media over a comment he made concerning other aspirants vying for the senatorial seat.

The controversial remark, posted on Facebook, drew widespread condemnation from many users who described it as disrespectful, dismissive, and unnecessarily provocative toward political contenders in the zone. While some defended the younger Moro, arguing he was simply protecting his father’s reputation and standing up against perceived attacks, the majority view online branded the comment as crossing the line of civility in political discourse.

Reacting to the uproar, Oche Moro, a serving officer with the Federal Fire Service, released a clarifying statement in which he described his original post as intended purely as sarcastic humour. He stressed that it was never meant to insult, belittle, or undermine any individual or their political ambitions.

“A few weeks ago, I made a comment on a post by @TomIdoko, and that comment has generated controversy and backlash,” he stated. “For the record, the comment was made purely out of sarcastic humour and nothing more.”

Oche emphasized that he was raised with strong values of respect, discipline, and moral responsibility, which continue to guide his conduct even in moments of disagreement. He acknowledged that the remark had been misunderstood and had caused offence, tendering a sincere and unconditional apology.

“I acknowledge that my comment was misunderstood and caused offence. I sincerely apologise for it and I humbly withdraw my comments,” he said.

He also addressed what he described as persistent insults directed at his father, Senator Abba Moro, noting that while he would always defend the senator’s reputation, any such defence would henceforth be done respectfully and constructively.

The apology appears to have helped de-escalate tensions online, with several commentators and observers describing it as a mature and responsible step. Many view the move as contributing to cooling political temperatures in Benue South ahead of future electoral contests in the district.

The incident underscores the heightened sensitivity surrounding political commentary in the zone, particularly when involving family members of prominent figures, and highlights the power of public pressure in prompting swift accountability on social media platforms. As the 2027 general elections draw nearer, such episodes serve as reminders of the need for restraint and decorum in political engagements across Benue State.
