Former First Lady of Benue State, Mrs. Dooshima Yemisi Suswam, has reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) across the state, declaring that no obstacle will prevent her from standing with her people in their hour of need.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday at the ferry crossing point in Buruku upon her return from Ugba—where she visited IDP camps—Mrs. Suswam, wife of former Governor Gabriel Suswam, emphasized her determination to continue engaging directly with those affected by displacement.
She highlighted the severe hardships endured by many IDPs, who were compelled to flee their homes through no fault of their own, often living in challenging and arduous conditions. This reality, she said, demands greater compassion and a shared sense of responsibility from all segments of society.
“No obstacle can prevent me from seeing my people. They may be in refugee camps for no fault of theirs, facing arduous conditions, but they are still God’s children who deserve our love and support,” she stated.
The former First Lady stressed that mere sympathy falls short; what is truly needed is sustained humanitarian assistance, genuine concern, and dedicated efforts to restore hope, dignity, and normalcy to the displaced communities.
She urged well-meaning Nigerians, relevant government agencies, and humanitarian organizations to keep prioritizing the welfare of IDPs throughout Benue State, ensuring that support remains consistent and impactful.
Mrs. Suswam’s recent visit and bold declaration come against the backdrop of ongoing displacement challenges in Benue, where communities continue to grapple with insecurity and loss. Her hands-on approach serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role that compassionate leadership and personal advocacy can play in addressing humanitarian crises and fostering solidarity among the people.
