A devastating incident has left the Gboko community in shock after a young man allegedly set fire to a house his girlfriend built with money he had been sending her over the course of their relationship.

The man, a native of Gboko who has been hustling in Lagos, had been in a long-distance relationship with the lady who resides in their hometown. For months, he consistently sent her money – not just for upkeep, but specifically to help prepare for their planned December 2025 wedding and to save extra funds so she could start a business after marriage and settle down comfortably as a wife.

According to reports circulating widely in Benue State, when the man finally returned home from Lagos to begin the traditional marriage introduction, things took a dramatic turn. His girlfriend reportedly refused to accompany him to her family for the formal introduction, raising the first red flag.

When he asked about the savings and funds meant for their future, he discovered that nothing was left. After pressing further, he allegedly learned the shocking truth: she had used every kobo he sent – including the money meant for their wedding and post-marriage plans – to purchase land and build a house in her own name.

Sources say the lady defended her actions by explaining that she wanted to secure her own future and achieve financial independence, even if the relationship didn’t work out. She reportedly saw the money as support freely given and decided to invest it in her long-term security rather than keeping it as cash for a wedding that wasn’t yet certain.

Feeling deeply betrayed and heartbroken, the man allegedly reacted in rage and set the newly completed house on fire. Photos and videos of the burning building have since gone viral across social media platforms in Benue and beyond.

As at press time, it is unclear whether the man has been arrested or if any formal complaint has been lodged with the police. The incident has sparked heated debates online, with opinions sharply divided.

Some condemn the man’s violent reaction, calling it criminal and dangerous, regardless of the provocation. Others, particularly men, express understanding of his pain, arguing that the lady’s actions amounted to calculated deception, especially since the money was sent under the clear understanding that it was for their joint future and upcoming marriage.

Many women have also weighed in, with some praising the lady for securing her future instead of waiting on a man, while others criticize her for not being transparent and for destroying trust in the relationship.

The burnt house now stands as a painful symbol of broken trust, dashed dreams, and the dangerous consequences of betrayal in relationships built on sacrifice and long-distance love.

Police authorities in Gboko are yet to issue an official statement, but investigations are believed to be underway.

This incident has once again ignited conversations about financial transparency, trust, and expectations in modern relationships – especially when one partner is solely funding the other’s lifestyle and future plans.
