Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially concluded his second tenure after a decade of service, marking the end of a significant era in Nigeria’s electoral administration. The handover took place on October 7, 2025, at 4:43 PM, during a brief ceremony with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
At the event, Yakubu transferred leadership to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, an INEC National Commissioner, who will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive replacement by the President. Appointed in 2015, Yakubu oversaw two general elections and numerous off-cycle polls, leaving a lasting impact on the nation’s electoral process.
The outgoing chairman’s tenure, which spanned ten years, included notable milestones in electoral management. His departure signals a transition period for INEC as the commission prepares for new leadership under Agbamuche-Mbu’s interim guidance. Stakeholders are keenly watching for the President’s next move in appointing a permanent successor to steer the electoral body forward.
