Benue-based human rights activist Ukan Kurugh has been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Makurdi after being arraigned on a 38-count charge bordering on alleged violations of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act.
In a detailed update shared on social media, Kurugh revealed that he was arraigned earlier today in Charge No: FHC/MKD/CR/268/2026, instituted by the Inspector-General of Police. He described the charges as stemming from his public demands for accountability regarding the death in police custody of Fanen Kpemtememan, insisting that his only “crime” was challenging the Nigeria Police to explain what happened to the deceased.
Kurugh stated that rather than addressing the questions raised, the police sought to have him remanded in custody. The prosecution opposed his bail application, which was moved by his legal team led by Bem Hanaze, Esq., who appeared alongside Desmond Wende, Esq.
Thankfully, the presiding judge granted the bail application, ruling that there was no justification to detain him in a bailable matter. The judge did not fix another date for further ruling on the application and granted bail immediately upon hearing the motion.
Kurugh expressed deep gratitude to his lawyers, sureties, and friends who showed up in court and offered support through calls and messages. He announced that the case is adjourned to May 6, 2026, for hearing.
The activist maintained that the legal action against him is an attempt to silence his advocacy for justice in cases of alleged police misconduct and deaths in custody. He reaffirmed his commitment to continue speaking out on such issues, emphasizing that the truth must prevail over intimidation.
No official comment has been issued by the Benue State Police Command or the prosecuting authority regarding the arraignment or the bail ruling at the time of this report.
