The Benue State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting agricultural productivity with the official commissioning of the 2025 fertilizer and farm inputs distribution. The event, held today at the Benue State Fertilizer Blending Plant, also known as Star Fertilizer and Chemical Ltd, was led by Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia.
Speaking at the ceremony, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Benjamin Ashaver, announced that the government will provide subsidies on fertilizer and other inputs to alleviate the burden on farmers. The fertilizer will be sold at a subsidized rate of ₦22,500 per bag, with payments strictly cashless through customized POS systems to ensure only genuine farmers benefit. Dr. Ashaver emphasized that this reform is part of the government’s resolve to eliminate fraudulent practices that have plagued the process in the past, including the supply of adulterated fertilizer, inflated prices, and diversion to middlemen.
Governor Alia, through the Commissioner, described this initiative as a bold step toward revolutionizing agriculture in Benue and contributing to Nigeria’s agro-industrialization drive. Farmers were advised against reselling the fertilizer, with a stern warning to use it for its intended purpose. The Governor also explained that this year’s distribution, typically scheduled for June or July, was delayed to allow for a thorough investigation into past malpractices.
In a goodwill message, the Chief Executive Officer of Star Fertilizer and Chemical Ltd, Julius Atorough, assured farmers of the product’s quality. He highlighted that the adoption of the TAC Agro fertilizer formula has made adulteration a thing of the past and urged farmers to be cautious when purchasing from unauthorized sources.
Traditional ruler Tor Lobi, HRH Chief Anagende, welcomed the development, dismissing concerns about late distribution. “Fertilizer doesn’t decay. We are happy it is available, and by God’s grace, as security improves in our villages, farmers will put it to use even in the next season,” he said.
Hon. Emmanuel Shimauwa, representing Ikyan State Constituency in the Benue 10th Assembly, pledged the legislature’s full support for the Ministry of Agriculture and its ongoing reforms. The distribution is expected to cover all 23 Local Government Areas of the state, with the Ministry framing the initiative as a deliberate move to confront farmers’ challenges head-on and restore confidence.
This flagship effort marks a significant stride toward ensuring sustainable agricultural growth in Benue State.
