EU Launches Initiatives to Support Displaced Populations in Northern Nigeria

The European Union Delegation to Nigeria, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), officially launched two critical initiatives at the United Nations House in Abuja. These programs aim to address the challenges faced by displaced populations in Northern Nigeria.

The initiatives, named the Sustainable Urban Integration of Displaced Populations in Northern Nigeria (SIDPIN) and the Support for Protection, Assistance & Durable Solutions (SPADS), are designed to restore hope and dignity to internally displaced persons, refugees, and host communities across Benue, Yobe, Adamawa, Kano, and Sokoto States. Through these efforts, nearly 30,000 people will benefit from improved access to housing, essential services, and livelihood opportunities.

In Benue State, the intervention is particularly timely, aligning with the administration’s commitment to providing durable solutions for displaced persons and creating pathways for sustainable development and peace. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, a key figure at the launch, commended the partners for their support and collaboration in addressing displacement challenges in Nigeria. He highlighted the importance of these initiatives in giving people a chance to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.
