The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) in Makurdi has achieved a significant milestone with the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) granting full accreditation to its Radiology Department. This accreditation, effective from December 12, 2024, allows BSUTH to train fourteen residents, including four Senior Residents and ten Junior Residents, for the next five years.
The decision follows a thorough assessment by the Accreditation Visitation Panel, which evaluated the department’s facilities, manpower, and academic programs. The panel commended BSUTH’s commitment to postgraduate medical training and urged management to address identified areas for improvement to sustain its accreditation status.
Dr. S. S. Sule, the Acting College Registrar, announced the accreditation during the NPMCN Senate’s 136th meeting on June 3, 2025, following the Faculty Board of Radiology’s recommendations. The approval underscores BSUTH’s readiness to enhance radiology training across Nigeria, with Dr. Sule expressing the College’s willingness to collaborate with the hospital on this front.
Hospital management also extended gratitude to the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, and the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, for their visionary leadership and support in upgrading medical training facilities at BSUTH. This accreditation marks a pivotal step in strengthening medical education and healthcare services in the region.
