BSUTH CMD Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande Urges Focus on Functional Systems

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, has called on APIN Public Health Initiatives to channel their efforts into functional systems during a courtesy visit on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. The visit highlighted the hospital’s remarkable transformation into a premier medical tourism hub.

Dr. Hwande emphasized the hospital’s significant progress, noting that BSUTH is now equipped with state-of-the-art clinical and non-clinical equipment. The hospital’s molecular laboratory is already treating hepatitis, and discussions are underway with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for potential collaboration in tackling infectious diseases. This transformation, he explained, stems from intentional reforms and strategic investments in infrastructure and human resources, positioning BSUTH as a model of efficiency and service excellence in the state.

Responding to the CMD’s remarks, Dr. Jay Osi Samuels, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of APIN Public Health Initiatives, commended the visible changes at BSUTH. He pledged the organization’s continued support to help the hospital achieve its vision of becoming a leading medical tourism destination. Dr. Samuels highlighted APIN’s commitment to complementing the hospital’s efforts by providing essential medical equipment and financial assistance, following the recently concluded health summit. He described BSUTH’s serene environment as highly motivating and conducive to healthcare delivery.

Dr. Samuels also praised Dr. Hwande’s visionary leadership, noting the remarkable progress and operational improvements since his last visit. The visiting team, led by Dr. Samuels and accompanied by BSUTH management, later toured the hospital’s newly upgraded facilities, including the Radiology Department, VIP Smart Clinic, and Chemical Pathology and Hematology units. The team expressed delight at the modern equipment, further underscoring the hospital’s advancements.
