The Chief Medical Director of Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, on Thursday, March 19, 2026, led an inspection of hospital services during the public holiday, following concerns over the ongoing Lassa fever outbreak affecting patients and healthcare delivery.
Dr. Hwande stated that the inspection was aimed at ensuring uninterrupted essential services. He emphasized that patient care must remain optimal despite the holiday, especially with the increased demands posed by the outbreak.
Joined by the Chairman of the Benue State House of Assembly Committee on Health, Hon. Damkor Matthew, the team assessed key departments, including Accident & Emergency and the General Out-Patient Department. They interacted with staff on duty, evaluating preparedness, resource availability, and adherence to infection prevention and control measures.
Hon. Damkor Matthew said the visit underscores the government’s commitment to public health, noting that oversight is critical to ensure hospitals respond effectively during emergencies.
Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at BSUTH, Prof. Michael Agbir, explained that clinical teams are on high alert. He added that protocols have been strengthened to manage suspected cases and prevent further spread within the facility.
The inspection concluded with assurances that BSUTH remains fully operational. Officials urged staff to sustain professionalism while reiterating that the government will continue supporting the hospital to combat the outbreak effectively.
The visit reflects ongoing efforts to maintain healthcare standards and contain the Lassa fever outbreak in Benue State amid heightened public health concerns.
