The Forum of Young Librarians in Benue State has issued a passionate plea, raising a heartfelt alarm over the dire neglect of public libraries in Makurdi, Otukpo, and Gboko. In a post on BENUE info-pedia, the group urgently calls on the government to rescue these once-thriving centers of knowledge.
The librarians lament the silence that now fills these libraries, describing it as a painful reminder of lost opportunities. “Our libraries, which once shaped generations with wisdom and ideas, now lie in ruins, leaving our youths without access to the tools that could inspire creativity, innovation, and personal growth,” the group stated. They emphasized that a functional library system is more than just books—it is about nurturing literacy, empowering schools and universities, and providing young people a refuge from idleness, crime, and despair.
With a passionate appeal, the librarians have turned to His Excellency, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, urging him to make the revival of these libraries a cornerstone of his educational legacy. “By restoring the libraries in Makurdi, Otukpo, and Gboko, Your Excellency will be planting seeds of hope that will blossom in the lives of countless young people across Benue State,” they added.
The cry from Benue’s young librarians, titled “Save Our Dying Libraries, Save Our Future,” highlights a critical need for action to preserve a vital resource for the state’s youth and future generations.
