In a significant step towards integrating advanced technology into governance, the Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, yesterday hosted the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju, along with his team at the Government House in Makurdi.
The meeting focused on exploring practical avenues for collaboration in deploying space science and geospatial technology to bolster key sectors in Benue State. Discussions centered on leveraging satellite data and remote sensing capabilities to enhance agriculture through precision farming and crop monitoring, improve security planning amid ongoing challenges, advance environmental management including flood prediction and resource conservation, and promote data-driven governance for more efficient policy-making and service delivery.
Governor Alia emphasized that Benue State is intentionally positioning itself as a forward-thinking entity, ready to harness innovation, science, and technology as essential drivers of sustainable development and improved public services. By partnering with NASRDA, the administration aims to bring cutting-edge space-derived solutions to grassroots challenges, particularly in the “Food Basket of the Nation,” where optimizing agricultural output and mitigating environmental risks are critical priorities.
This engagement reflects the governor’s broader vision of modernizing Benue’s administrative and developmental frameworks, ensuring that technological advancements translate into tangible benefits for citizens. As NASRDA continues to expand its applications in areas like earth observation and geospatial intelligence across Nigeria, this collaboration could mark a pivotal move for Benue in adopting space-enabled tools to address local needs effectively. The meeting underscores a growing recognition at the state level of the transformative potential of space technology in fostering resilience, productivity, and good governance.
