Residents of Otukpo township in Benue’s South senatorial district can now access clean, potable water following the successful restoration of the Otobi Water Works. The facility, once a symbol of life in the region, has been brought back to full functionality under the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia, marking a significant breakthrough after decades of neglect.
The achievement, accomplished through careful planning and execution by CGC Nigeria Limited, was confirmed during a due diligence inspection on Thursday, September 25, 2025, by the Benue State Public Procurement Commission (BSPPC). The inspection team, led by BSPPC Director-General Engr. Dr. Comfort Akwonya Adadu, verified that the facility is fully operational, pumping water from the Otobi plant to the Otukpo Water Board for distribution across the township.
Dr. Adadu praised the project’s quality, stating, “We reviewed the project specifications thoroughly and found that everything had been done to standard. At the Otukpo Water Board, we confirmed that water is reaching the intended locations. This is a remarkable achievement.” She also revealed that the Katsina-Ala Water Works is next in line for rehabilitation, further extending Governor Alia’s commitment to providing clean water to more communities across the state.
The Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Hon. Ugwu Odoh, was lauded for his oversight, while Project Manager Engr. Daniel Akali Martins of CGC Nigeria Limited assured residents of the facility’s longevity with proper maintenance. “Routine maintenance will ensure the longevity of the facility. Major rehabilitation may not be required for several years. The next focus should be on expanding the facility to meet the growing demand,” Martins stated.
Highlighting the efficiency of the rehabilitation, BSPPC Quantity Surveyor Ejembi Agada noted, “This project is purely a rehabilitation effort, and the contractors have delivered quality work. It represents a cost-effective solution for the state government while addressing the immediate needs of the people.”
Governor Alia’s leadership has been instrumental in overcoming years of neglect and mismanagement, restoring sustainable water supply to the area. The administration’s decisive actions and commitment to impactful governance continue to set a standard for the region.
