The Benue State Government has commenced the payment of compensation to residents whose properties were affected by the ongoing construction of the Buruku Bridge, a move hailed as a clear demonstration of transparency, fairness, and adherence to due process.

The flag-off ceremony took place on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Buruku Youth Centre Hall and drew a large gathering of traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials, engineers, and the affected property owners. The event underscored the socio-economic significance of the bridge project to the local population and the broader region.

Leading the state delegation was Engr. Tivfa Wombo, Director of Engineering in the Ministry of Works, Housing and Urban Development, who was joined by engineers from the state ministry and representatives of the Federal Ministry of Works. Engr. Wombo appreciated the patience and understanding displayed by the affected residents throughout the project timeline. He clarified that the compensation strictly covers properties falling within the legally established right of way for the bridge construction and follows approved government guidelines.

Beneficiaries were given two payment options: direct transfer into individual bank accounts or disbursement through nominated community representatives. In a decision widely praised for promoting accountability, the community unanimously chose direct bank transfers to individual accounts to guarantee maximum transparency.

Speaking on behalf of the Burukuku Local Government Council, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Zegege Raymond Aondodaokura (represented by his deputy, Hon. Abite Olele), commended Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia’s administration for its responsive and people-oriented approach to development. He noted that while infrastructure projects sometimes require sacrifice, the governor’s commitment to compensating affected citizens reflects fairness, respect for the rule of law, and genuine concern for the welfare of the people.
