Police Arrest 23-Year-Old Abdullahi Usman Over Killing of Benue Varsity Professor and Brother

The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, identified as Abdullahi Usman, from Awe in Nasarawa State, in connection with the murder of Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo and his younger brother, John Nyityo.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, officers attached to the ‘D’ Division responded to a distress call from the Adaka axis in Makurdi Local Government Area, where they discovered the bodies of the victims at their residence in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer revealed that the 58-year-old professor from the Department of History at Benue State University and his 19-year-old brother were killed by unknown gunmen. Abdullahi Usman has been arrested, while investigations continue to apprehend the remaining suspects.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Adaka community and the university community, especially as lecturers at the state university are currently on strike. The killings have raised concerns about security in the area.
